CHLOES TOP TIPS FOR INSTANT SKIN HYDRATION

Dry, dehydrated skin leads to a whole host of problems including fine lines and wrinkles, breakouts and a dull complexion. We asked aesthetic therapist and surgical coordinator Chloe to put together her top tips to preventing your skin from drying out.

Drink plenty of water

Drinking enough water can help you combat a variety of skin issues including psoriasis and eczema. It does this by helping your digestive system flush out toxins from the body. This in turn will improve your complexion for healthy, glowing skin.

Protection

The key is preventing water from leaving your skin by keeping its moisture barrier intact. One of the best ways to achieve this is with a topical treatment of jojoba oil to lock in moisture and prevent trans-epidermal water loss. Products like Obagi Hydrate and Neostrata Bionic Serum can be used as a good daily base for skin hydration and we would always recommend Heliocare SPF for daytime sun protection.

Eating healthy

Eating a healthy balanced diet does wonders for your skin and looking after your liver is key to hydration. Eating bitter foods like chicory, endive, rocket and grapefruit all stimulate liver and gall bladder function and a healthy liver means healthier skin. A sluggish liver will eliminate toxins through the skin which can lead to dryness and redness, a good way to combat this is by eating coloured fruits and vegetables which will help to nourish the skin and support collagen cross linking. Also citrus fruits and berries are rich in vitamin C which can assist with tighter, fresher looking skin.

DIY Face Masks

Creating a homemade mask of avocado is another natural way to soothe dry skin. We recommend you puree half an avocado and mix it with a teaspoon of olive oil; you can also add a tablespoon of honey for very dry skin. Apply the mask to your face, leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, and then wash it off. Your skin should be left feeling moisturised, but you can double up on the hydrating effects by applying your regular moisturiser as well.
Aloe Vera to dry, irritated skin

While often thought of as a remedy for sunburn relief, aloe vera gel can be helpful during the dry winter months, too. It works by alleviating redness and irritation related to excess dryness.
