SCLEROTHERAPY

Sclerotherapy is the process by which a chemical solution is injected at multiple points along an unwanted thread vein, irritating the lining of the vein wall and, in conjunction with compression, causing the vein to collapse. Your body absorbs the redundant vein over time, leaving with you smoother, unmarked skin where the unsightly vein used to be.

LEGS

Though thread veins can appear on other parts of the body such as the chest, they are most common on the skin of the legs and face. Facial thread veins are usually addressed through laser treatment, but at Epsom Skin Clinics we focus on utilise the highly effective sclerotherapy procedure for treating unwanted spider/thread veins on the legs.

FAQS ABOUT SCLEROTHERAPY

Even when results are compared with those delivered by the best lasers, sclerotherapy is still the “gold standard” for removing spider veins on the legs. Laser treatments can be painful and much less effective and predictable in delivering the results our clients are looking for.

In the hands of our experienced clinicians, the discomfort of sclerotherapy should be minimal. Some areas of skin might be more sensitive than others, but most patients are pleasantly surprised at how little discomfort the procedure causes.

  • Avoid tanning beds and sunbathing in the weeks prior to treatment.
  • Don’t take NSAID medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin – these thin the blood and increase the likelihood of bruising.
  • Don’t shave within a day of the treatment.
  • Wear clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area on the day.

Some veins might disappear completely as the initial bruising fades, while other veins might still have isolated clotting beads along the track of the vein. Some larger veins can survive but they will be thinner and easier to close in a follow-up session. Most clients can expect to see a 50-60% improvement several weeks after a single treatment.

Though some veins will disappear after a single session, and other veins reduced in size, we generally recommend several treatments for optimal results, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. A personal plan will be discussed in your consultation.
