DERMATOLOGISTS TOP TIPS TO PREVENT MASK RASH

Facial coverings play an important role in preventing the spread of Covid-19 and lots of us in public facing jobs – including all the staff at our clinic – are required to wear a mask all day. This continuous use of facial coverings is causing havoc with our skin, clogging up pores and trapping bacteria so we asked our dermatologist Doctors to give us some top tips to keeping your skin protected when wearing a mask.

Prepare Your Skin

The mask rubbing against the skin combined with moist conditions are the perfect storm for skin irritation, the best way to avoid this is to ensure your skincare products are creating a sufficient barrier between the mask and your skin. A good quality moisturiser from a professional skin care range such as Obagi or Neostrata is essential to give your skin the protection it needs. If you’re wearing your covering for an extended period then we recommend carrying this with you and reapplying during breaks in your day.

Keep Hydrated

Hydrated skin is healthy skin which will be less susceptible to irritation and damage so we recommend you focus on keeping your skin hydrated. The first step in hydrated skin is to drink the recommended amount of water every day (at least 2 litres). You can also give your skin intensive boosts of hydration with treatments such as the Hydrafacial – a six step hydrating facial treatment – or Profhilo hyaluronic acid injections.

Refresh Your Mask

Instances of skin irritation are common around the areas that the masks touch and rub against the skin. If you’re doing something particularly physical or just wearing the mask for a long period of time then replacing the mask with a fresh covering will be important to keep the area clean.

Repair Damage

If the skin does start to show signs of damage or irritation then it’s important to addresses this before putting your skin under more stress. Some professional skincare products are especially effective in repairing the skin such as Neostrata Bionic Serum.

If you’re experiencing skin irritation which is not improving then we recommend you get in touch to book a consultation and receive a bespoke treatment plan to restore the skin to good health. Book a consultation today
