Inflammatory Acne Scarring
There are different forms of acne scarring. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation presents as dark spots on your skin that form after an acne breakout. They are caused by inflammation during the skin’s healing process which cause an abnormal pigment response. On fairer skin types there may also be broken blood vessels which leave red or purple marks. Inflammed acne can produce more aggressive blemishes which can leave more permanent marks.
What causes the scarring?
Acne scars occur when normal tissue in the skin is destroyed and replaced with fibrous tissue. When they body tries to heal the area it will either produce too much tissue, which results in keloid or hypertrophic scars, or it will produce too little tissue which will result in depression in the skin.
There are three main types of acne scars:
- Ice pick scars – small, deep holes in the surface of your skin that look like the skin has been punctured with a sharp object.
- Rolling scars – caused by bands of scar tissue that form under the skin, giving the surface a rolling and uneven appearance.
- Boxcar scars – round, oval depressions or craters in the skin.
